What is the profit margin in an auto spare parts business?

If you search for the profit margin in an auto spare parts business, you will find very different numbers.
That is because markup, gross margin, operating margin and net profit margin are not the same thing.
There is no single standard profit margin for an auto spare parts business in India. Profitability changes based on whether you are a retailer, wholesaler or distributor, the parts and brands you sell, purchase prices, inventory turnover, discounts, customer credit and operating costs.
For a useful real-world reference, ICRA reported that India Motor Parts and Accessories Limited (IMPAL), an established pan-India automotive spare parts and accessories distributor, recorded a 7.4% operating margin in the first nine months of FY2026. ICRA also noted that the company's operating margin had remained around 7% to 9% over the previous few years.
That does not mean every spare parts distributor earns 7% to 9%. It shows why the margin made on individual parts can be very different from the operating profit of the overall business.
Quick answer: A spare part can carry a healthy gross margin while the business keeps a much smaller operating or net profit after salaries, rent, warehousing, delivery, discounts, returns, credit costs and other expenses.
The important question is therefore not simply:
“What margin do auto spare parts have?”
It is:
“How much of that margin does the business actually keep?”
First, understand what “profit margin” actually means
Before comparing percentages, you need to know which percentage is being measured.
Markup
Markup tells you how much has been added to the purchase cost of a product.
Suppose you buy a part for ₹800 and sell it for ₹1,000.
Your gross profit is:
₹1,000 − ₹800 = ₹200
Markup is calculated on the purchase cost:
₹200 ÷ ₹800 × 100 = 25%
So the markup is 25%.
Gross margin
Gross margin calculates the same ₹200 profit against the selling price instead.
₹200 ÷ ₹1,000 × 100 = 20%
The same transaction therefore has:
25% markup
20% gross margin
This difference matters.
If someone says a part has a “25% margin” when they actually mean a 25% markup, the real gross margin is lower.
Operating margin
Gross profit is not the amount the owner ultimately keeps.
The business still has to pay expenses such as:
Employee salaries
Shop or warehouse rent
Delivery and logistics
Sales commissions
Electricity and utilities
Software and administration
Returns and damaged stock
Packaging
Branch operating expenses
Operating margin measures what remains from the core business after operating expenses.
Operating margin = Operating profit ÷ Revenue × 100
Net profit margin
Net profit margin goes further and considers the broader costs and income of the business.
This is why:
20% gross margin does not mean 20% net profit.

Again, this should not be treated as the standard margin for every distributor.
Instead, it illustrates an important point:
Product margin and business margin are different
A retailer may earn a relatively healthy gross margin on an individual brake pad, filter, bearing or electrical component.
But after the cost of running the overall business is deducted, the operating margin can be significantly lower.
If somebody tells you:
“Auto spare parts have a 25% profit margin.”
The correct next question is:
“25% of what?”

Part A
Gross margin: 30%
Selling frequency: once every three months.
Part B
Gross margin: 15%
Selling frequency: several times every month.
Part A has the higher margin percentage.
Yet Part B may generate more gross profit over a year because the money invested in the inventory is converted into sales repeatedly.
This is why a warehouse full of high-margin parts is not necessarily a profitable warehouse.
Slow-moving products can lock money into inventory for months.

Consider a simplified auto spare parts business.
This is a hypothetical example, not an industry benchmark.

At first glance, the business has a 20% gross margin.
But after ₹1.1 lakh of operating expenses, the operating profit is ₹90,000.
The operating margin becomes:
₹90,000 ÷ ₹10,00,000 × 100 = 9%
So the same business can truthfully have:
20% gross margin
and
9% operating margin
at the same time.
That is why comparing random profit-margin percentages online can be misleading.
Where does profit disappear in an auto spare parts business?
A business does not lose margin only because its purchase price is high.
Profit can leak at several points between purchasing the part and collecting the customer's payment.
1. Excessive discounts
Consider a part that costs ₹800 and normally sells for ₹1,000.
Gross profit is:
₹200
Now suppose a salesperson gives a ₹100 discount.
New selling price:
₹900
Gross profit:
₹100
The customer received a 10% discount on the original selling price, but gross profit dropped from ₹200 to ₹100.
That is a 50% reduction in gross profit on that transaction.

2. Selling prices are not updated
Suppose a supplier increases the purchase cost of a product.
